Julian Treasure speaks, writes and trains on conscious listening, powerful speaking and designed sound, to improve relationships, productivity, engagement and wellbeing. Poor listening is one of the largest unexamined costs in business, over $10 trillion a year in disengagement and miscommunication. His 5 TED and 10 TEDx talks have been seen an estimated 170 million times, making him one of the five most-viewed TED speakers of all time. His online courses have taught over 160,000 students, and his three books are Sound Business, How To Be Heard and Sound Affects.

Julian Treasure helps leaders and teams transform their communication, performance and relationships. His books, talks and workshops teach how conscious listening, powerful speaking and designed sound improve productivity, engagement and wellbeing.

Listening is the foundation of every other communication skill, and it is almost never taught. The cost of that neglect exceeds $10 trillion a year, and only one employee in 12 rates their leader a very good listener. As artificial intelligence absorbs analytical work, listening and speaking become more valuable, not less.

Julian's 5 TED and 10 TEDx talks have been seen an estimated 170 million times, making him one of the five most-viewed TED speakers of all time. He has been featured by Time, the BBC and NBC's Today Show, and on over 100 podcasts including Diary of a CEO. His mission is to regenerate the world's listening.

The spoken introduction

For a host to read from the stage or on camera. It runs to about a minute.

Spoken introduction

In our daily lives, the ability to speak and listen well shapes our relationships and our outcomes. Yet these skills are rarely taught in schools or in business, and the resulting breakdowns cost the world economy over $10 trillion every year in disengagement and miscommunication.

Julian Treasure's mission is to change the way people, teams and organisations communicate, by teaching the forgotten skills of conscious listening and powerful speaking. An estimated 170 million views of his 5 TED and 10 TEDx talks make him one of the five most-viewed TED speakers of all time, and his talk How To Speak So That People Want To Listen is the sixth most-viewed TED talk ever given. His books are Sound Business, the award-winning How To Be Heard, and Sound Affects, and his online courses have taught over 160,000 students.

His work has been featured by Time, The Economist, the BBC, CBS and NBC's Today Show. He has appeared on over 100 podcasts including Diary of a CEO, and his keynotes and workshops have reached audiences across finance, sales, technology, media, architecture, retail and manufacturing.

Please welcome Julian Treasure.

Credentials

  • 5 TED talks and 10 TEDx talks, 15 in all
  • An estimated 170 million views across all platforms
  • One of the five most-viewed TED speakers of all time
  • How To Speak So That People Want To Listen is the sixth most-viewed TED talk of all time
  • Over 160,000 students taught through his online courses
  • Three books: Sound Business, How To Be Heard and Sound Affects
  • Toastmasters International's Golden Gavel Award
  • The International Listening Association's Special Recognition Award

Two things to avoid, because they aren't true: Julian isn't the most-viewed TED speaker of all time, he's one of the five most-viewed, and it's the talk rather than the speaker that ranks sixth. The 170 million figure is an estimate across all platforms, and the validated floor, counted from TED.com and the official TED YouTube channel, is over 140 million.

Technical requirements

Nothing here is unusual, but the sound matters more than at most events, because the talk is partly made of it.

The talk runs from Julian's own Mac

Julian speaks about listening, speaking and sound, and his Keynote slides have sound embedded in them. The timing of slide transitions and sound effects is critical, so the presentation runs from his own MacBook Pro on stage, where he can see presenter view. He brings his own remote control.

A small table, and no lectern

Julian prefers not to use a lectern. He needs a small table for the Mac, in front of him or slightly to one side so he can see it while standing in the light, ideally around waist height so that it doesn't interrupt eye lines or form a barrier between him and the audience.

At the table

A power socket, an HDMI cable (the Mac has an HDMI socket) and an audio cable with a 3.5mm stereo jack, although sound can also come through the HDMI.

Sound, screen and microphone

A good quality sound system. A projector or large screen that takes 16:9 slides. A radio microphone: handheld first choice, headset second, lavalier last.

The sound check

The balance between the sound from the Mac and the sound from the microphone is critical, so a sound check in the empty room is vital. It usually takes 10 minutes unless we find a problem. Please tell us when suits you, ideally not immediately before the event, in case anything needs fixing.

For your sound engineer

Please don't apply any limiting or compression to the sound from the Mac. It has a lot of dynamic range, and that range is part of the delivery.

Full technical requirements

Julian Treasure: technical requirements

Julian speaks about listening, speaking and sound. He uses Apple Keynote slides with sound embedded in them, and the timing of slide transitions and sound effects is critical.

He prefers not to use a lectern, but he needs to see presenter view of his slides while speaking. Even where there's a comfort monitor, the best way to do this is always to run the presentation from his own MacBook Pro on stage, so that he can see its screen. This requires:

- a small table for the Mac, in front of him or slightly to one side so he can see it while standing in the light, ideally around waist height so it doesn't interrupt eye lines or form a barrier between him and the audience; - on stage by the Mac, a power socket, an HDMI cable (the Mac has an HDMI socket) and an audio cable (3.5mm stereo jack), although sound can of course also be delivered through the HDMI; - a good quality sound system; - a projector or large screen that will take 16:9 slides; - a radio microphone: first choice handheld, second choice headset, last choice lavalier.

Julian brings his own remote control for the Mac.

The balance between the sound from the Mac and the sound from the microphone is critical, so a sound check in the empty room is vital. This usually takes only 10 minutes, unless we discover any issues. Please let us know when would work best for you, ideally not just before the event in case of any problems.

A note for the sound engineer: please don't apply any limiting or compression to the sound from the Mac. It has a lot of dynamic range, which is important to Julian's delivery.
